Now we come to science. My kids love science. General science, nature study, forensics, computer science, it doesn't matter, they love to learn about how the world around them works. But their favorite is doing science experiments and truly this is the best way to learn hands down! (Or should I say "hands on".) Yeah, I know that was lame:)
Anyway, a great way for young ones to learn about God's creation is through various experiments. I get a lot of ideas from homeschool blogs and Pinterest! Also field trips to nature centers, the park, or museums are other great ways to get kids into science. With fall upon us, going out and having an Autumn scavenger hunt is a favorite with younger (and older) ones! All it takes is a paper bag and list of things to find. In the winter we would search for signs of winter, same in the spring.

We've also used lapbooks. When Lily was younger she really enjoyed them. We used lapbooks to keep track of different clouds we've learned about, moon phases, the earth's various layers, etc.
We have used lapbooks for other subjects also such as bible, art and music. Currclick is a great website to get cheap downloads for any kind of lapbook you want. I love that website!
Our go to textbooks for the upper grades is Apologia. I find them to be well written with lots of illustrations and science experiments to try. At the end of each of module or lesson there is a study guide to do and a test. For Brooke though one year she didn't like Apologia's Chemistry so we switched to Chemistry 101. It was super easy to use and the experiments were easy to understand.
There is so much to do when it comes to science and don't forget it should always be fun too! Try not to get hung up on the academics of it and the kids will talk about what they've learned for years to come. Do as many experiments as possible, they LOVE it!
One more thing. I've learned the hard way that when you want to do an experiment, plan ahead. Get all the things you will need and read the experiment through. My kids would get a little impatient with me if it looked like I didn't know what I was doing because I didn't take the time to prepare and it sucked the fun right out of something that should have been great.
